The finger of blame certainly needs to be pointed at the tools in DC, but there's something I've been thinking about.  You use the phrase "surveillance state", and I don't think that is the appropriate term.  I've been trying to decide on a brief description, a tag, for what we've seen happen in this country; militarized police who treat everyone as the enemy, wholesale spying on the citizenry, the crushing of civil rights.   I think we should just use the phrase "police state".  "Surveillance state", while discomforting, does not seem to be to be sufficiently ominous.

Of course, when you add in the bloated military, fervent jingoism, and imperial war, another term seems entirely apt;  fascism.  Still.
