uses this as an excuse to stop saber rattling and do what Reagan did with the Soviet Union - sit down and talk.

Stupid question hour starts now and ends in five minutes.

have done after the Dennis Rodman events in North Korea. I thought it was silly for the world to laugh that off, and after watching last nights episode of VICE on HBO that brought those events about, I am even more convinced this is the case.

      •  North Korea is a very different story (1+ / 0-)

NK is run by a bunch of racial supremacists who think that literally everyone else in the world is subhuman and evil and that the purpose of their country is to protect true Korean blood and culture from foreign contamination by any means necessary.

Even famously nationalistic Iranians don't go that far.  Some of them even think that the Islamist regime is fundamentally "Arab" ... and any Iranian would be happy to explain to you how they are Persian, not Arab.  Many Iranians actually look back on the Shah's reign as a time of freedom and prosperity, when Iran had the respect of the world.

and look at the kids faces at the ends as they are meeting the globe-trotters at the end, and tell me that relations cannot change. And they will not change if there is no communication.

        •  The North Korean leaders don't REALLY believe this (1+ / 0-)

It's a good propaganda line, because with all the crap those poor people have to take, the only way to keep them under is to a.) scare them and b.) convince them they're tops.

Dear Leader Kim was educated at a boarding school in Switzerland during his formative years, and all of the upper echelon in government have foreign educations, too.  They import foreign wines and delicacies for themselves, as well as foreign electronics, etc. and watch foreign films.  The Kim family has over a billion (with a B) dollars in assets in foreign banks.    They are not crazy or isolated, just evil.  They know a lot about the West... their game is to prevent their people from knowing about it, too.  In the service of that, they've built a cult of personality (did you know that the elder Kim never had to use the bathroom, he was so pure?) designed to elevate and obfuscate.  It's been working for sixty years now, so they're not stupid.
