  •  It's not just program cuts; (6+ / 0-)

SUNY tuitions have risen precipitously over the past decade, matched by cuts in scholarship aid and Pell grants. The result has been the obscene rise in average student indebtedness.

And it's actually worse than it looks. SUNY has been touting its improving academic competitiveness, citing the higher average SAT scores of entering freshmen. But that is an artifact of exploding college costs driving even affluent students toward the State schools rather than any actual academic improvement. To the contrary, many academic programs are being hollowed out.

Yep, I'm aware of all those global pressures, and indignant at the squeeze the political elite is performing.

Student debt and restricting "real" college to the elite few work quite nicely as a one-two punch.  They force young people into neo-liberal beliefs and practices while offering a stark choice:

Do all you can to join the 1% or spend your whole life scrabbling over the scraps in desperation with everyone else.
