  •  Would Matheson be better as Gov/Party Chair (1+ / 0-)

I've been thinking recently, Matheson is kind of a dead weight in Congress, and any benefit we derive from him keeping a Tea Partier out of the House is wasted by the fact that he costs a substantial amount of cash, and you always have to keep an eye on his campaign. And he honestly doesn't do much in the House; he's passed a grand total of one bill in 12-13 years.

Despite this, he's got a 65% favorable rating. And he's been neck-to-neck in a 2011 PPP poll for both Utah Governor and Utah Senate. Now, the Senate would be even more expensive than his House race, so I'm disregarding that for now.

I think that he has two great options to do a lot more than he's currently doing: A run for Governor, or a go at being State Democratic Chair.

A gubernatorial run could bring a lot of attention to Utah Democrats, and boost their numbers based on Matheson's popularity, even if he didn't win. He could moderate the legislature a little bit, and could break the 30-year momentum of the Utah GOP by interrupting their decades long hold on the Governor's office. He could also excite voters because, you know, he's a Democrat with a chance!

On the other hand, if he became State Dem Chair, he could use his popularity and experience with centrist and center-right Utahns to guide the Democrats towards greater numbers. He'd present a well-liked face to the public, and he'd be very good at promoting the party. Additionally, he could have his former staffers run for state legislature seats, which could go well if he emphasized that they were like him in terms of politics.

Of course, Mia Love is dangerous enough that this should probably be done after 2014.

    •  For you guys in Utah, (7+ / 0-)

he would be better as Gov.  But for the country at-large, he's better in the House because he's holding a seat that is undoubtedly safe R without him.  Any slim chance we have at taking back the House this decade depends on Matheson holding that seat.

      •  That's actually why I mentioned the first point (0+ / 0-)

While he's fairly important in getting enough seats to take back the House, it isn't clear that he would vote for Pelosi (or whomever) for Speaker, and the money expended on him would be better used on close races in Congressional seats that won't instantly revert to safe Republican if he retires (or even if he has a slightly worse result than 2012).

I'd rather have him building the party in Utah and helping us expand, more than I would want him to be an expensive "maybe" vote for a Democratic Speaker. The current Utah Dem Chair Jim Dabakis has a good heart, but lets face it, he's a gay liberal Democrat in Salt Lake City who only has experience in Salt Lake County. He isn't going to be able to expand the party that much.
