If you want to see a dysfunctional party, look no further than the Democratic party of Alabama.  Five years ago, Dems controlled both houses of the state legislature and a couple of statewide races.  Now, the "party" is infighting between a group created by the past Chair of the Democratic party and the actual Democratic party in the state.  Neither has any money, nor do they have much of a future.  Alabama once was a state where local Dems could win races.  Now, I doubt another Dem will win a statewide race in the next 20 years.  The sad part is that there's even an opening here in the state because the GOP has way overreached going after the local teacher's groups and public education after years of frustration.

      Why not work with it?

      •  The leader of the new group, Judge Kennedy (0+ / 0-)

was the former chair of the Democratic party in Alabama and bankrupted it on his way out.  There's no party hq anymore and the way he left ensured that no one left in the current Democratic party establishment would be supportive of the group.  Kennedy is trying to supplant the Democratic party in Alabama with his new group.

near a position of power at all. It is time to get rid of him and Nancy Worley. Alabama Democrats need to make a fresh start. It is going to take years and years to do so, but keeping these old guys around is a waste of everybody's time.

and yell: "A house divided on to itself cannot stand!"  I know that feeling.  As an altruistic Democrat, I cannot comprehend why some people are set on doing more harm than good because of ego.

It is a pretty daunting task for anyone to want to do, particularly in Alabama. There is no "natural" area to look for the next Democratic base like there is in Louisiana or Mississippi or Georgia. Jim Hood populism won't play well in Alabama either.

The trends in the state are not good for Democrats. I can't even imagine how one would start rebuilding the party. And I think that's the only state in the South where I can say that.

              •  What is Jim Hood populism? (0+ / 0-)

who filed suit against high profile insurance companies after Hurricane Katrina when they were trying to defraud homeowners of various protections.

He won nearly every case. And ever since then, he's been very popular and active fighting "business and banking interests."

There is a slightly darker side to this as well - Hood did this with Richard Scruggs (a friend of Trent Lott), who was later convicted on civil contempt charges.

But most people think Hood's work suing insurance companies gave Mississippian residents a better start at rebuilding than those in Louisiana.
