In summer 1999 a Democratic senator died and was succeeded by a Republican elected in a special election. This led to 12-12 tie in the chamber. Republicans retook the chamber in the 2000 election.

Though I'm not sure how they ran the chamber.

Because it was the lower House, and the two parties just traded being Speaker periodically. But the thing with New Hampshire is it's an even-numbered body, and there's no LG, which means the President of the Senate is the first in the line of succession in case of a vacancy. How would they reconcile that in the case of a tie?

The only other time I recall this happening was in the Montana House of Representatives from 2009-2011, when it was tied 50-50, but state law says control of the body goes to the party who controls the governorship in that case.

        •  But that didn't affect the line of succession (0+ / 0-)

Since that falls to the Secretary of State.
