  •  The so called "war on drugs" is really a "war on (3+ / 0-)

    Americans who use drugs."

If you are wealthy, white, well educated, and urban you can easily find a psychiatrist who will prescribe you dexedrine for ADHD, benzodiazapans for anxiety, sleeping pills, oxicodene, and pretty much anything else you want.  If your prescription for Adderall falls out of your bag and is picked up by a young, poor, person of color he or she can be sent to prison for 10 years for possession of a Schedule 5 substance.

Our drug laws are blatantly racist, stupid, classist,  destructive to our youth, families, and the integrity our society.

Also, in an era of vast domestic information surveillance, and and all people who break any law, that we only selectively enforce can be coerced to do all sorts of bad things.

What happens to the idea of the "social contract" that is supposed to be the theoretical foundation of our democracy and legitimacy of our government when almost half of our citizens are engaging in activities that could end up with them being prosecuted as criminal felons?

Many countries including Portugal have a decade or more of experience using a medical, mental health  and social service model for addressing the many problems that can be causing drug abuse, such as self medication, rather than using a police and military enforcement model with far better results.

Our current model is not working and our political leaders   including our President lack the courage  and wisdom to give up the brutal and self-destructive "Prohibition" approaches proven not to work over the last century.

Keep on truckin' old pot smuggler.  I would like to apologize to you on behalf of our corrupt system and cowardly and stupid political leaders for damaging your life.

other, really, by finally legalizing. I don't care who you are, you've paid a hell of a price, too (not including, of course, the neanderthals who get their rocks off over the whole thing).

There can be no protection locally if we're content to ignore the fact that there are no controls globally.
