  •  The europeans have learned their lesson. (6+ / 0-)

What we need to learn is that just because our commitment to the British during WW II saved some of them from totalitarian brutality and domination does not mean that western Europe must remain in a permanent state of servitude to our interests as a way of showing gratitude. This is the attitude that resulted in "freedom fries", this lack of slavish deference in jumping into a quagmire with us with both feet in Iraq. Europe saw what happened there. They don't want any part of it, they can't afford it, and western Europeans don't want to be at war. I don't blame them.

Our knee-jerk need to "protect our interests" all over the globe has gotten pretty ridiculous, mainly because we have lost sight of just what our interests are. We really need to sit down and think about that without all the glorified militarism which has permeated every strata of our society. Kaiser Bill would recognize the influence of our military on government and population alike. We fought against that kind of militarism you know, and won. Now it's bit us, and I see no sign of it ending well.

I resent that. I demand snark, and overly so -- Markos Moulitsas.
