    I think there's a difference, though, between using these tests to judge the students and using them to judge teaching methods. Judging a student solely on standardized tests is like judging them on whether they can always find Waldo. It's only vaguely related to what you might want.

    But we have to judge methods based on something measurable and on something we broadly find beneficial.

      We don't "have to judge methods based on something measurable."  We do it that way because we have been taught to do it that way.
