Polling, imo, is useless for the most part, since something like national security is a very complex topic. Most of what has been made public after you wade through all the rhetoric is infinitesimal to what the government is really doing in our names. Many here already suspect that.

      1. polling is never useless, unless you want to simply dismiss what people think. Dangerous, that.
      2. polling is dynamic, and you may get a different result over time. Or not. See Lightman v Pincus, but it's been pretty consistent since 2006.
      3. polling doesn't determine what's right, it's simply a useful data point, best used if you understand what it is. And what it isn't. If more people understood that, the 2012 election discussion would have been more nate silver and less unskewed poll guy.

It has been pointed out here that polling can be skewed by changing one word.

So just how reliable a metric is it of what people think? Not very, obviously.

So unless you're Nate Silver, who also predicted the winner of the NCAA Men's Championship, an individual poll is mostly useless in gauging what Americans really think.

any given poll might be wrong, or misinterpreted, and Nate gets stuff wrong on rare occasion, too.

That doesn't nullify the usefulness of polls any more than a snowstorm proves global warming wrong.

          Sorry.

The point is learn how to read them, not learn how to ignore them.

Take today, for example, wherein we learn that people have mixed feelings about all of this, and public opinion might be evolving. That in itself is useful, especially if you assume (and no one ever should) that everyone agrees with you. ;-)

Unless you hate the polls because they disagree with what you know must be right. In that case, you're Unskewed Polls guy.

It's fine not to be interested in what most people think at this point, but for those of us who are, it isn't completely unknowable.

      •  the small bubble that exists here on DK (4+ / 0-)

believes people will get more outraged as time as time goes on.
the 27 percent number below is only going to get smaller.
anyone who believe that Americans will be more outraged in a few days?

It'll probably happen for a reason most of us aren't thinking of.

Namely, the NSA is wasting billions and billions of dollars on this illegal and unconstitutional harassment of ordinary citizens.

This will feed straight into the anti-tax movement.  Count on it.

          •  hmmm. disagree. (0+ / 0-)

            it won't.
i don't see this outrage anywhere, period.
            except on daily kos.
and on ron paul groupie sites.
            but we'll see.

so don't play this stupid game of being too cute by half or putting words in my mouth that I did not say.

my comment was about how the public won't give a shit.
            and they won't.
we went into a war that they cheered on based on lies, so get a grip.

i'm outraged about a bunch of crap that hardly registers on the polls.
doesn't mean there's nothing to worry about.
jesus Christ you are annoying with this.
