    the case could be made,

that the main reason we have inherited this NSA surveillance state, we now have

-- is PRECISELY because Cheney and Bush were SO incompetent at the National Security job.

    thanks lunachickie for the feedback.

Competency means using Intelligence intelligently. CheneyBush used these methods because they were incapable, and unwilling, to use a scalpel instead of a guillotine. The irony, to me, is that we are far LESS safe when our Intelligence agencies are drowning in a tsunami of useless info. 99.99999999+% of what they are gathering--whether it's metadata or content--is the banal communication of ordinary life. Which is multiplied, of course, exponentially by all the ways we have of communicating today.

These programs willfully build the biggest haystack possible in which to search for a few, elusive needles. This not only destroys our privacy, but also stupidly destroys the effectiveness of using covert technology smartly and selectively to catch actual terrorists.

My (American) mom lives in Canada part of the year. When I call her to talk recipe tips, is this a potentially 'terrorist' act? Do the Fourth Amendment rights of two American citizens not apply because we're comparing spinach sautée strategies across an international border?

Ho'oponopono. To make things right; restore harmony; heal.

Computer security author Bruce Schneier said that dumping more hay on the haystack actively interferes with searching for needles.

It's quite clear that the purpose of the NSA's multiple unconstitutional programs to Hoover up our personal data -- it's quite clear the purpose has NOTHING to do with security, and everything to do with blackmail, harassment, suppression of political dissent, etc.
