    If that were true, then lists of car insurance ids, passport ids or drivers license numbers maintained by the government would be unconstitutional. That's ridiculous.

    A phone number, in and of itself, can't be used to identify anyone. If the government seeks to identify a person given a phone number, they must obtain a warrant.

    When you sign up for wireless phone service, you sign a contract stipulating that your phone records can be provided to law enforcement. Why do people consent to that and then scream that the NSA has their data?

      Who you called and how long.  Who called you and for how long.

      And I don't consent to those "we may give everything to law enforcement without warrants" contracts, I only sign the ones which say "in response to a proper warrant".
