    Nothing new under the sunzabitches
    --is there?

Reminds me of something I was told by some Hungarians I'd met in the summer of 1989 (before Everything Changed) & then saw again a year later. When I asked them what they thought of the Changes, they were cautiously optimistic but one of them said, We are afraid that the same people will end up running things. (E.g., Slobo Milosevic, who reinvented himself as a Velika Srbija nationalist when his earlier con as a Yugoslav Communist petered out.)

They's the same sunzabitches as ever, just dressed up to the ninety-nines in the figleaf of pseudointellectual justification du jour.

    •  There's some historical opinion that Josef Stalin (8+ / 0-)

worked for the Czar's secret police before becoming a Bolshevik and spearheading the revolution.  You often find side-switching among these selfish bastards.  Benedict Arnold was a perfect example.  If we were ever involved in a conflict with a country with more money than we have, like China, you better believe the entire GOP would be feeding Beijing information for a cut of that money.  They'd be competing with each other to betray their country.  Hell, they'd probably have to set up some kind of stock exchange to handle all their treasonous transactions.

Nothing makes a Republican angrier than a smile on a poor child's face.

until Lenin had his first stroke--well after the Revolutioni, the Civil War, and the NEP for that matter.

People can argue about what a bastard Ulyanov was, but Dzugashvili is the object lesson for what can happen when you combine a card-carrying paranoid sociopath who also happens to be a genius at bureaucratic infighting with a cadre of revolutionists who had no experience running anything of consequence, let alone the government of an entire country.

IMHO Trotsky wasn't all that far off the mark when he called Stalin's rise to power the Soviet Thermidor:

For historians of revolutionary movements, the term Thermidor has come to mean the phase in some revolutions when power slips from the hands of the original revolutionary leadership and a radical regime is replaced by a more conservative regime, sometimes to the point where the political pendulum may swing back towards something resembling a pre-revolutionary state.
(People can argue about what a bastard Bronstein was as well, but the guy had eyes & a brain & some sense of history.)

        •  They were all murdering psychos. (0+ / 0-)

It's just that Lenin and Trotsky were raving fanatics, while Stalin was just - as you say - a card-carrying paranoid sociopath who saw the entire world as being out to get him personally.

          smells like...history

Show me the whisky stains on the floor
Show me an old drunkard as he stumbles to the door
And I'll see a young man with so many reasons why...
...and there, but for FORTUNE, go you - or I... - thanks, Phil
