    I have been an atheist as long as I can remember, although both my parents had spiritual beliefs.  

    We had "devotionals" over our intercom every day, as well, when I was in school, and so I learned to tune them out, in protest, usually by reading a good book while they were on.

    Therefore, I never heard any of the school announcements.

    I can attest that there is no better way to prevent kids from keeping up with the school news, than to mix them with a religious service.
