  •  Cheers from SC (24+ / 0-)

...where I'll give Gov. Oops more than my middle finger, I'll also give a quote from Chinese philosopher Fah Kyuu who once said "read my name again, bitch". Can't make this stuff up, people...

Jeers to insomnia. The head meds are helping but the lack of sleep is eventually going to cause issues but I don't care because I'm so focused right now. Maybe I need to obsess about sleep or something...

Cheers to you lovely folks. Been too busy to check in. This is not a bad thing. The busy part anyway.

    Have a good one folks.

    •  You too? (5+ / 0-)

I'm a mess from interrupted sleep. Interrupted from very, very painful headaches.

I call them migraines, but I don't know what qualifies a headache as a migraine.

It might start out in the back of the head or stay there.  Mostly, it will 'travel' to one side or the other.  [Mine were always on the left after the pain intensified even if they started out at the base of my skull first, then moved to the temples where I had the sensation that I had an arrow through my temples.]  Some people get light-auras and other visual disturbances with migraines.  Yet others have a problem with things like light shows (like back lighting on DWTS, etc.) because the flashing lights will trigger the migraine (yet other people who have grand mal epilepsy seizures also have a problem with flashing lights that trigger the onset of a seizure).

With a classic migraine, there is the total inability to stand movement, sounds, or light without barfing.  After the first one or two times of barfing, you got nothing to barf up except green bile and have dry heaves.  Once prone on a couch or in bed in a darkened room with no media on, one can't move without waves of nausea or barfing.  If there's a kid or adult who accidentally jiggles the side of the bed, the result is the same.

Go to ER, get shot with one cc of Gynergen in one arm, one cc of some kind of anti-nausea shot in the other arm; wait 20 minutes to see if there's an allergy reaction from the shots.  Go home and sleep for 12 hours.

        Awake pain-free.

I also had a prescription for Cafergot Pb [caffeine, ergotamine, phenobarbitol].  To this day, I still have the instructions memorized:  "Take two at first sign of headache, then one every half hour thereafter, not to exceed six in 24 hours."  Mostly, the pills didn't work.  NO ONE told me that ergotamine was a derivative of ergot which is also the source of LSD.  [See Witches: Salem & Europe.]  It was like 30 years later I found that out when watching a segment on a TV show that was about Leary.  THAT's why one must not mess up instructions on prescription meds!  Oh - caffeine is a vaso-constrictor and evens out the blood vessels.  Constricting blood vessels where the ballooning parts hit nerves is what makes for that horrible intense pain (that description from the pharmacist long ago).  Up until the Cafergot pills I had no idea caffeine could be used as a medicine.

[Fast forward to when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, have many pill bottles with different directions - the first thing I did after two days of trying to remember if I took my meds or not was go down and get a pill minder.  Every Saturday evening after my last b/p med dose I refill one pill minder with my b/p meds, then refill the other with my gout meds and vitamin D pills that the dr. wants me to take.  I might be late with any dosage if I get caught up in doing genealogy research and forget the time, but at least I remember to take them and don't either take too many pills or skip them because I can't remember whether or not I took them as directed.]

Migraines?  Uff da!  Whether you have the classic migraines or not, you still have my empathy.

I barf maybe once every two or three years. I have a strong stomach.

I get floating lights, not the usual floaties that come with aging eyesight, but little lights that flutter like snowflakes on a breeze. That's clue one.
I then get a dull ache or sense of pressure at the base of my skull which travels in a few moments over my right ear and throbs in my temple for a while before clawing at the back of my eye.
Soon, the whole right half of my skull indicates that it has better things to do and tries to pull away from the left half.

Usually, a frozen gel pad on the neck and base of the skull works wonders, but not lately. Last night, a Claritan D and a hot shower soothed me enough that I could sleep.

I've tried going for walks. Sometimes, massaging my gums helps.

I do get light sensitive, but not extremely so. Loud, sharp sounds are an irritant and I do have to have the tv quieter than usual. I think the noise doesn't affect me so much because I have tinnitus, so noise is a constant companion.

Today, I'm trying to cut out caffeine entirely. I know about its effects on blood vessels, but too much caffeine can cause headaches. A few nights ago, I took an Excedrin Migraine tablet and a several minutes later, the pain about tripled to the point I was crying, or at least there were tears running down my cheeks, and occasionally, I'd yelp and swear. (Jesus is so pissed at me right now.)

So I guess I'm getting migraines. So far, I haven't had to go to the ER. (It costs me $150 every time I do. I may work and live in NY, but my healthcare comes from TX.)

Thanks, Nonny. I'll soldier on. Though last night, I found myself at the peak of my pain feeling grateful that I do not own a firearm. Then I came to my senses a little and jonesed for a joint. Too bad my wife, as well as "modern" American society, frowns on such a harmless little thing.
