•  For native americans, it definitely is.. (20+ / 0-)

And it depends on the mouth it's coming out of.   I grant that many see it the way you do, but look at their logo, and the name, and ask yourself if people would say: "So what they are the Washington N---ers.  I mean, I hear it on the radio all the time, they don't mean it that way.."

You'd gasp and think "What the hell is wrong with you.."

Native Americans have protested yearly, asked congressmen and others to protest.   So, I'd say there is some knowledge it's offensive ;)

    •  And you don't think the use of N---ers (sic) has (0+ / 0-)

evolved? People use that label in numerous context. I've been called that by people of multiple racial backgrounds, and I don't exactly look or consider myself black.

      •  Sigh (16+ / 0-)

so you would be OK with the Washington Niggers football team?

*sorry, to those who find the word offensive, I really don't see how adding a few **s make it any better.

        •  First off, would this be in relation to a team (0+ / 0-)

          founded in 2013 or 1933?

I'll concede the point that a team like the 'Skins wouldn't have that name if they were founded today. They've had 80 years of history to build up a reputation for not just the franchise, but also the label. Newbies don't get the same privileges and benefits that veterans do.

          •  You are seriously trying to tell (14+ / 0-)

me that if it was founded a long time ago, nobody would mind?

Yeah, Y'know Little Black Sambo was created a long time ago, and sometime in the last 30 years has been bannished from all public representation--same with blackface.

Here's the gid, you know damn well the Washington Niggers would never be OK, and would have been changed 50 years ago.  The only difference here is that you don't care enough about what Native Indians think to give half a shit to change it.

            •  No team would ever be named the Washington N--rs (1+ / 0-)

Why? Because the term itself is considered disrespectful.

Teams choose their names so as to take on an identity they respect.

No NFL team would ever call themselves the Fluffy Bunnies. They will call themselves Lions and Tigers and Bears. Or Vikings. Things people RESPECT.

              Please proceed, Governor.

            •  The Redskins were founded a long time ago and some (0+ / 0-)

people seem to mind. There are some who do. So there's that.

And do you think that the term "Redskin" would be more accepted as a racial slur were it not for the NFL team? You have to admit that it's shaped how people view the term.

And maybe I do have a disconnect when it comes to racial issues - I'm multiracial to the point where I identify with no racial group, and no racial group wants me.

              •  The history of the team (10+ / 0-)

Is that it's founding owner prided himself on his racism, marketted the team to the south as a "The South will rise again" refused African American members of his team as long as possible, and thumbed his nose at society on almost all of those issues.

They use a team name that is a racial slur.

Let me ask this: is changing a team name to something.. less horrible that bad?   Economically, it would make more money for the team, as they would immediately sell more jerseys, etc.   It would bring home a lot of members of that team who have come forward and spoken up against their former team name.

Changing the team name doesn't obliterate it's history.   The Washington Bullets don't have a ton of history, but no one thought "wow, we'll forget our past" when they became the Washington Wizards.

The Philadelphia Quakers became the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Chicago Stanleys became the Chicago Bears.

Changing a team name isn't the worst thing that could happen, period.

          •  Professional sports teams change their mascots (5+ / 0-)

on a regular basis.  The NBA team in Washington, the Wizards, was previously known as the Bullets.  The New Orleans NBA team is changing its mascot from the Hornets to the Pelicans for this coming season.  Numerous college teams which were once nicknamed Indians (or worse) which have existed longer than the Washington NFL team have changed their mascot to something less offensive.

The 80-year reputation of the Washington NFL team to many sports fans is that of being a team which was generally mediocre or worse and is  owned by a racist who is not a very good judge of football talent.

      •  Oh, it's evolved, all right. (0+ / 0-)

It's evolved to the point where white people think they should be able to use the word because some African Americans do.
