character in the film. He certainly seemed to be the wisest.

I am going to reserve judgement on the new Lone Ranger film until I see for myself. I doubt it could be any more racist than the original, but that's an EXTREMELY low bar. I'd like to think he will be more Rafiki like. From what I hear, he is more of the lead than second fiddle. Although it is a comedy, I don't think he will be the prat (butt of the joke).

The redskin's name is horrible and pointless. I don't think all Indian Team names are bad though. FSU continues to be Seminole. That's the tribe's name- not an epithet. The team also has the blessing of the tribe to use the name.

Johnny Depp is IMHO an extremely intelligent, daring, and sensitive actor.  While I doubt it would affect his choices in this movie, he does have Native American heritage, which may have added some subtle shadings.

He has in many movies worn metaphorical war paint -- think the eye liner in Pirates of the Caribbean or his costumes in everything from Edward Scissorhands to Willy Wonka -- and he is also a clever satirist.  Based on the little I have seen of this movie, I have surmised that he is playing Tonto as an intelligent man of color in what is mostly a white man's world, world he is by definition tonto (i.e., dumb), and that he uses wits, trickery, and misdirection (i.e., the ridiculous warpaint) to succeed.

      We shall see.

A 47% return on investment--that's pretty doggoned good!
