One small step for economic sanity from Dean Baker:

Celebrate the Defeat of the Granny Bashers!

It isn't often that progressives in the United States have much to celebrate. After all, the news has swung between bad and worse for most of the last three decades. That is why we should be celebrating the victory over the Campaign to Fix the Debt and its efforts to cut Social Security and Medicare. [..]

First, the real scary projections of exploding deficits in the next two decades largely disappeared as the rate of health care cost growth slowed sharply.  . . Slower projected health care cost growth eliminated almost 70 percent of the projected shortfall in Medicare. [..]

Second, there were actually substantial cuts in the budget, both in 2011 and more recently as a result of the sequester. These cuts are not good news, they are hurting important programs. They also are slowing the economy and costing jobs, but they have lowered projected deficits to levels that fall within almost anyone's acceptable range. [..]

Finally, the intellectual case for a looming debt crisis got blown out of the water because of the famous Reinhart-Rogoff Excel spreadsheet error. [..]

The result will be a somewhat smaller share of the pie for those on top and a larger share for everyone else. And it will almost certainly also mean a more rapidly growing economy. The latter would especially be true if we could reverse the sequester and other pointless austerity measures.

But the move to offense is not about to happen right now. And with all the money it has available, we can't even assume the CFD effort will stay dead.

We haven't heard very much from Ed Rendell and company for a few weeks.

    •  Until I opened the diary... (10+ / 0-)

I thought the Republican Trinity was Ronald Reagan, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, with Sarah Palin in a supporting role as the Virgin Mary (ack!)

However... Trickle Down, Deregulation, Privatization... are on target and I still can't believe how the austerity budget nonsense has framed the whole Beltway debate when the Eurozone is falling apart because of it.

      •  It's the money, silly (5+ / 0-)

The reason the republican trinity of trickle-down, dereg, and privatize continues to be worshipped even after thirty years of the proven problems with this economic theory, is that very wealthy interests continue to benefit from these programs, and continue to advocate for them.

The people who these wealthy interests advocate to are our law-makers, who also receive financial gifts from these wealthy interests.

So there are very many and large financial incentives to contiue these programs, even if the programs don't work as advertised.  (The programs work just fine in aiding the transfer of wealth from the have-nots to the haves, but are of course sold to the gullible public as creating prosperity for all.)

No one of consequence is going to bury this unholy trinity.  They would sooner kill the goose that lays the golden egg.
