      enormous number of desperately poor people in Brazil (and in the other South American countries too).  Despite all of Lula's best intentions, those people have not seen any great improvement in their conditions (or at least they have not seen enough change quickly enough to keep them satisfied).  They are understandably frustrated and impatient, and feel that the economic and social change in Brazil has not included them. And that is what causes protests.

      I would bet the farm that they do NOT want to topple the government--they want the government to do more to help them. Now.

      That is why the fare increases and the Olympic expenses are such a powerful symbol.

      as fast as he can, unless you're referring to the legal and justice systems of our country. In that sense, he's changing things very quickly indeed.

      of the Democratic party and how it works. At least it seems that way to me.

      Other than recreating the Democratic party as a Reaganesque center-right party that likes Republicans better than its own base, and changing the rule of law in this country till its unrecognizable, I don't think Obama is really trying to change things as fast as he can.
