    Both are a way to exploit free labor, but the similarity ends there.

    Internships are designed specifically to expose interns to job opportunities, to help companies weed out potential employees, and, in this abusive market, to get free labor.

    Volunteering is all about the free labor.  Volunteers generally want to help with something they care about.  In the process, they sometimes meet people who might be able to help them.  More importantly, they meet those people in the context of being willing to work without being prodded to do so and sharing some passion.  That can put you in front of a long line.

    LG: You know what? You got spunk. MR: Well, Yes... LG: I hate spunk!
