Absolutely, Europeans have no interest in coming here to live.  They consider us a dangerous, violent and retro country.

The congressman is an ignoramus living on the fantasy of "American Exceptionalism".  Same with his constituents.  But as long as they believe them "furners" are living just up from Stone Age, they're content.  They pump themselves up by making everyone else small.

Many immigrants came here from Europe, mostly from Italy (some were my relatives), Germany, France and other European Countries.  At that time we were seen as a country where they could live freely, work hard, follow their religious beliefs, marry (if they weren't already), raise their children and have the American Dream.  They were free of the wars that engulfed their lives and those of their parents and grandparents and took refuge here.  Most of them were leaving behind homes that were now a shell due to the bombings, lack of food and the basic needs of people and the fear that they suffered through.

Now, why should they come here?  They see this country as backwards, no socialized medicine, with our violence and where they're treated like 2nd class individuals.  Education is much better in their countries and they have Government pensions, plenty of food and make decent salaries.  The legal immigrants coming here now are from the Far East, Middle East (and some from these 2 are staying past their visa allottment) and Eastern Europe (Russia and countries that were under the rule of Russia when it was the Soviet Union).  Those coming over illegally are mostly from Spanish speaking countries and they're leaving behind the despair and poverty of their countries in order to support those they've left behind and make a decent living here in the U.S.A.
