Bill Clinton was getting attention for a possible run in 1988, which he declined. Instead he gave perhaps the longest keynote ever (designed to get his face in front of as many Democrats as possible...which worked.) Right out of the gate Clinton had 30% of the primary vote in the polls.

At some point, folks saying there's a dark horse out there need to start naming names.

the msm.  The "big names" of the party (Cuomo, Gephardt, Gore, et al) were too scare to run against HW, who was as high as 91% approval Rating due to the Gulf War.  So the Dem field had "small names" only, Clinton among them, and none were regarded as having any chance against HW.

Then Perot altered the entire mix, first peeling off huge slice of support from HW, then dropping out of the race right before the Dem Convention, seemingly endorsing Clinton by saying that one of the reasons he was dropping out was "The Democratic Party has revitalized itself", giving Clinton a great opportunity to use a strong convention performance to get those former HW voters that had now been freed by Perot, an opportunity Clinton took great advantage of.

    •  Yes, I remember that speech (0+ / 0-)

As I recall, it was considered to be a dud.
