  •  They spent $40 million to open NYU Abu Dhabi. (12+ / 0-)

That's right. The full residential housing cost of the entire freshman class. They spent it opening an Abu Dhabi branch.

    •  They could well make that money back. (3+ / 0-)

And look, if they massively subsidized campus housing, what's the economic sense in that?  The money would still be coming from somewhere, like instruction.

Back in the sixties, it was, for some of my classmates' nouveau riche parents, the college of choice because it cost more than everyplace else. How weird is that?

But they had an uptown campus and a downtown campus at the time.

      Hah.

      •  Sadly, that's a widespread misconception (1+ / 0-)

The idea that high price tag=better is so ingrained in our society, that people turn their noses at public universities even though the lower price tag is due to a state subsidy, not a lower operating cost.

When I went to grad school, I met a lot of richer kids than me, whose parents sent them to private schools all the way.  They weren't snobs at all, but they had this infuriating assumption that sending your kid to a public university would be depriving them of a better education.  Because Berkeley or the University of Illinois are just crappy schools, right?

        •  Ask a Stanford grad (0+ / 0-)

about Berkeley. (I don't know the equivalent for UI . . .) S/he'll tell you about it.

    •  Interesting (0+ / 0-)

We just hired a NYU Abu Dhabi faculty member. I'll have to ask him about that. I had assumed the emirate picked up a lot of the cost.
