to the hegemony of capital, and its emanations like the War on the Poor, it would at least be a simulacrum of democracy.  But we have exactly none of that, the entire American establishment enthusiastically endorses the hegemony of capital and the extirpation of any social counter-forces (see files marked ACORN, Shirley Sherrod.)  So yes it's a rout, because atomized, isolated, alienated working people, taught to embrace a doctrine of "rugged individualism" present a laughable sort of opposition to a well-organized, class-conscious effort by society's ruling classes, backed by its primary political elements, to roll its agenda over the rest of us.

any sense of linked fate in the U.S.

that is the old story of seeking out alliances across the color line; elites have long been able to hustle the white working class and poor by appeals to the psychic wages of whiteness. when they wake up it will be too late.

If you don't advocate for financial policies that benefit American's 50,000 wealthiest households, you are actively attacked and ostracized.

I'm living in America, and in America you're on your own. America's not a country. It's just a business.
