  •  i'd rather have obama watching the gun (0+ / 0-)

nuts than merely relying on joe arpaio.

the more important slippery slope was already slipped. putting power in the hands of people who actually care about protecting non-gun owners would be a step back up it.

we have to admit our local law enforcement agencies aren't really interested in protecting people from the gun nuts, which is why we typically rely on the FBI and other national institutions to do a better job of it. i welcome the nsa getting involved. i don't think gun nuts deserve any more protection from spying than other kinds of potential terrorists. just because they're americans doesn't make them less of a threat to kids (or anyone else). statistically it probably makes them more of a threat.

    •  And how will turning the NSA on "gun nuts" (1+ / 0-)

help prevent violence? (For the sake of argument, I'll ignore the whole issue of the NSA being an arm of the military which is no way tasked with spying domestically)

Most shootings occur spontaneously (gang violence) or are the actions of lone wolf psychopaths. You aren't going to catch them on the phone discussing their plans to shoot up a school or a movie theatre.

      •  terrorists are terrorists (0+ / 0-)

that's what the nsa is dealing with as i understand it. i hope they're spying on the american taliban.

we spied on radical islamists in order to get guys like bin laden, and we kept the raids a secret, etc.

i hope they're doing the same to america's gun nuts.

as a citizen, i expect my government to look into every potential terrorist that's a threat to my kids, not just the brown ones.

      •  pretty sure most mass shooters leave data trails (0+ / 0-)

on the internet or via other organizations that have reported their problematic activities, etc. and some of these so-called lone wolf american terrorists are more connected than we pretend, you know that.

a terrorist is a terrorist. if spying on a radical islamist's phone got us bin laden (and evidently it did), then there's your answer.

      •  and... gang violence? (0+ / 0-)

are the gangs using smoke signals to communicate?

some of you people really just don't seem to have the humanity to even bother thinking through this issues in anything approaching an honest or sincere way.

obviously gang violence is coordinated, planned, and executed with the very thing we're talking about - phones.
