    I think back to what Nixon was saying about Jews and blacks behind closed Oval Office doors--and while recording himself--, and I don't think hate speech is more mainstream.

    I just think that our communication channels are a heck of a lot more efficient with giving hate speech more exposure.    

    What formerly were small regional AM stations spouting off-color racist stuff is now nationally syndicated Limbaugh.  What formerly were racist comments made at the country club now is communicated via email...and becomes widely accessible to everyone with the press of a button.

    That's how that stuff gets out there.  And then we have countless watchdogs catching this stuff and disseminating it immediately so that we all are much more aware of the bad stuff within hours of it becoming public. Formerly, it might take days, weeks, or even months to become widely known.

    The racists have always been there--we just happen to be able to hear and see them better.
