This is much bigger than just the 4th Amendment -- which can seem quaint and inconvenient, even counter-productive to the broader goals of providing for the common defense and promoting the general welfare. This would be a program aimed at overthrowing the entire Constitutional gov't.

If this is true -- if NSA ordered wiretaps of important figures in the military and political branches of government would undermine everything from free speech to the entire Constitutional scheme where the people elect representatives and a President who is supposed to be the Cmdr-in-Chief. This would be the kind of power Edgar J. Hoover only dreamed about having.

    •  Hoover had it (4+ / 0-)

Just not the information technology to scan in everyone.  But he knew what the major political, military, and entertainment figures were up to.  And used it to inflate the FBI, create the propaganda of the G-men, and glamorize law enforcement.  The propaganda basis of a police state that allowed the Red Scare in the 1940a to work so well for Richard Nixon and Joe McCarthy.
