  •  Where the heck was I when this rally was (5+ / 0-)

taking place? It was in my neighborhood and I didn't know about it. And that's my own damn fault because had I known I would have been there or had I seen the rally as it progressed I would have damn well stopped and joined in.  I've now got "Uptown Uprising" in my Facebook news feed and will get to know them better and see how I can lend a hand.

Spoken like a true capitalist pig, Mr Gassman! Disgustingly familiar, isn't it. Should be; having been hearing variations of it for 45 years now.

Uptown has been a glint in the developers' eyes for at least 40 years now but it hasn't really happened... yet. There have been inroads made with the yuppification by condo of Beacon and adjacent streets but the razing of the old housing stock still hasn't gotten much a foothold. BTW, it's this that I think has probably led to reduced enrollments at Stockton and Stewart Schools. The vicious cycle rolls on ...

Thanks, Bob. This is an exceptionally fine piece of writing and I am proud to know you!

There is a spirit of community struggle in Uptown that has kept its unique character alive even in the face of financial pressure and police repression. I was gentrified out in 1976 when our building on Clarendon was bought by developers. Before we left, I had the great pleasure of working the precinct for the insurgent aldermanic candidacy of Cha Cha Jimenez, the former Young Lords leader.
