    •  The latest trend for Hispanic kids where I taught (4+ / 0-)

was a "fauxhawk"--the kids would take hair product and push their hair all up to the center of their scalp and spike it up there to look like a Mohawk

from the end of that rat-tail article.
Exactly. You need to be able to control your hair in the science & art classes, and plaited does the trick, white, black or tan.
That should be the standard. A few years ago all the young women around here were wearing what they called a "messy-bun." Which amounted to not brushing your hair, gathering it all back and pulling it one and a half times through a ponytail, then being sure not to make it neat and tidy like the twisted & smoothed bun Momma wears. It was a disgusting mess and food servers were doing it.

is really going to affect ones art ability...

It sounds like you just dont like the look of a 'messy bun', but thats no reason to go around banning them. I take hair things personally because as a native american male growing up I had long hair and was constantly harassed by schools to cut it. These kind of things are all about conformity and have nothing to do with anything else. Even the mohawk banning is ridiculous when one watch the news and watch NASA workers with them.

If Jesus was around these days he'd find it awfully hard to get an education.

what I meant although it's true I find the messy bun unattractive anyway but I wouldn't ban it.

In art class once I watched as a long-haired girl who had ignored being told to tie her hair back lost a large chunk of it to the jewelry grinding wheel.  Bunsen burners don't go with floppy hair either. Just good practice.

Outside of that people can do what they want or whatever their hair will do. I love Hair. Tips for the Bob Ross pic!
