  •  Boehner could head off that misery (5+ / 0-)

by refusing to allow votes on amendments the teabag conference proposes in order to keep Democratic votes.  Poison pill amendments from the far right will keep an immigration bill from passing just like they kept the farm bill from passing.  Now that may be the plan the teabags have for disposition of the immigration bill, but Boehner's reputation as Speaker will suffer another body blow if he allows that to happen.  If he ignores the holy Hastert rule and the bill passes with the help of Democrats, he would avoid that situation.

Conservatives (conservative talking heads in the media) would hate that dependence on Democratic votes and would forecast the end of Boehner's speakership because he did it, but let's be serious:  nobody on the Republican side of the House aisle wants Boehner's job except Boehner, even though it seems to make him miserable.  What conservative wants the thankless task of herding all those feral cats into agreement on anything while still having to deal with House Democrats?  Cantor?  Not a chance.  McCarthy?  Don't make me laugh.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H. L. Mencken
