Thank you for this diary. I am a physician who smoked for 50 years (do as I say, not as I do). Started vaping about three years ago and have not had  a cigarette since. The FDA did a flawed analysis of e-cigs a couple of years ago which scared a lot of people. However, there have been a number of studies, primarily from the Dept of Public Health at Boston University, that seem to confirm that there is very little, if any danger posed by e-cigs. And there is zero risk to bystanders.
Like most vapers, I quickly moved beyond the devices that look like cigarettes and are activated by dragging on the device like a cigarette. These batteries require constant and don't last very long.
I currently use variable volt "mods" that use rechargeable batteries or variable voltage e-cig batteries like the Ego-twist or Vision spinner. These will last all day without recharging and are available from a number of on-line retailers. Be sure to buy chargers for your batteries.
I buy my cartomizers directly from China from an outfit called Greenhouse One. They cost about $5 for a pack of 5 and are often available for less when there is a special going on. US vendors generally charge $1.50 for a cartomizer. They are sold in packs of 5.
As far as juices are concerned, there are lots of reputable USA vendors including Vaperite, Vapor Station, Backwoods Brew, Liberty Flights and Freedom Smokes, to name a few. To save money, a lot of vapers buy the juice and then cut it with plain PG or VG, available from Vapor Renu.
I figure the cost of vaping is less than $1.50 a day. As previous pack and a half a day smoker that is a considerable savings!
    Hope this is helpful
