  •  Britan was ruled by a king and the colonies didn't (7+ / 0-)

have elections. This is a ridiculous false equivalency.

If you want to blame someone for the Surveillance state, blame the public. We are the ones who crapped our pants after 911 and elected the morons who passed these laws. Did you really think this stuff wasn't going on after the patriot act was passed? Jesus, grow up.

    •  Well we have elections (0+ / 0-)

but as of late they are awfully jury rigged, see gerry mandering in North Carolina..

True Britain was a monarchy, but check all the powers that have been granted to the President as of the Patriot Act. There are much less restrictions on his power and the police and military power than their used to be.

It may not be a monarchy yet but it's pretty damn close to a tyrannical regime if we had a Republican President along with the Congress of Obstruction.

      Just saying....

      •  You can't vote a Monarchy out (0+ / 0-)

Politicians make decisions based on what will get and keep them elected. Shocking, I know. If you are looking for someone to blame look to the slightly more than half of your relatives, friends, coworkers, and and other assorted acquaintances who voted, I'll say it again, voted for these shitheads. We're getting the government we deserve.

That would mean we voted for them.

We need to do better. Politicians are just going to do what they do.

The colonies had legislative councils which were elected by free men - probably a wider franchise than in Britain at the time. They were only not responsible for defense and foreign affairs - in effect the same position as the Crown Dependencies today.

The proximate cause was not some invented lack of franchise, rather the unwillingness to pay for the recently ended war with France which established the western boundaries of the colonies in terns of both fortifications and the treaties with the first nations. The use of fake "Indian" costumes in Boston was not co-incidental but a deliberate attempt to involve native Americans so the colonists could later ignore all the treaties and steal their land (which of course happened later). It also happened to occur a year or two after two separate decisions in the Scottish and English courts which meant that slavery within Britain was illegal. Any slave from the colonies setting foot on Britain was automatically free following those decisions.

We will work, we will play, we will laugh, we will live. We will not waste one moment, nor sacrifice one bit of our freedom, because of fear.
