  •  Southern businesses are stupid... (10+ / 0-)

Back when Kia/Hyndai built a plant near Columbus, Georgia the local chamber and their media was falling all over themselves in anticipation of the $11 an hour jobs. Now they're falling all over themselves over the $9 an hour jobs they'll get when Hostess reopens.

Seems they haven't figured out that $9-11 an hour workers have to live in old trailers and shop at the dollar stores, not their downtown businesses and suburban car dealerships!

but it lets them keep the slave class many of them miss so much.  Only now it's not based solely on race.

    •  Look, it's still better than no employment at all. (0+ / 0-)

I grew up in a rural County in North Carolina. Many of these places are dying after the collapse of traditional industries and agriculture. Maybe that's unavoidable, but you can't fault the local governments for trying to reverse the situation, and the fact is that if you don't have much local capital, you only recourse is to try to attract investment from outside. The real trick is then leveraging that outside investment into sustainable local development. That's what happened in Silicon Valley, the RTP and China.
