    The older systems were mostly used before GPS was widespread.

    On the 757 we have two GPS plus the three INS units. The INS units are mainly there to provide heading and attitude information but they also act as backups to the GPS for navigation.

    If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!
