  •  Could be usage (3+ / 0-)

    Could be the manufacturer.

Hopefully CFL failure rates will be moot within a couple years :)

      cold, wet, rain, damp, vibration,

      all those just kill CFLs

      •  Vibration, damp... (5+ / 0-)

That could explain why the CFLs in my ceiling fan and bathroom don't last very long.

in my bathroom b/c I use it so rarely. (I've been in this apartment for about 7 years by now, and maybe I installed it shortly after moving in.) During the day, the window provides enough light, and at night I don't bother turning it on b/c there's enough ambient light from the rest of my apartment and the streetlight outside.

          Guess it's just as well I didn't!

Elsewhere, I have CFLs. I've been wanting to switch to LEDs in at least one lamp -- a table lamp with a hurricane-lamp-style glass lampshade. My ceiling lights are all enclosed.

I wonder if the 60-watt Cree would be okay in that lamp, or whether even a hurricane-style shade (open at the top) would be too much of an enclosure.

          Anybody know?

          •  We just bought some Cree 60 watt LEDs (5+ / 0-)

And have found they are brighter than the incandescent bulb one replaced.

All the LEDs I have are much cooler than the incandescents are, so it would seem to me that it would be fine in pretty much any lamp that can hold the 60watt incandescent bulbs.
