    stock of the nation.  Had to be bailed out by President Ford.  One reason was the city itself trying to provide all sorts of services (rather than NY State, for example).  NYC itself doing single payer seems like a return to that kind of spending.  I think such programs like that should be at the state (or federal) level rather than the municipal level, as you want the broadest base of participation/coverage possible.

    Then again, NYC is so big that its own population is a broad base of folks, I just worry about a repeat of the city going bankrupt.  Last time it happened, NYC came to the feds with hat in hand, the nationwide polls overwhelmingly telling NYC to jump in a lake, and Ford initially denied a bailout.  Later Ford gave the bailout, with lots of conditions (NYC having to get its fiscal house in order).
