  •  Will any south american country now offer Snowden (4+ / 0-)

Seems the Euro countries got over their outrage at the Obama administration and are now doing the bidding of Obama, (what a guy, eh? our prez!)

     Venezuela – POSSIBLY.
President Maduro says Snowden “needs the world’s protection:”

that said his plane stopped again in the Canary Islands for fuel around noon eastern.  I was trying to figure how long it would take him to reach Bolivia and thought it might be about 9 or 10 hours (though it seems like they'd need fuel again along the way, maybe as soon as they reach South America coast).

I'm curious to see what kind of reception he will get when he arrives in South America, and/or arrives home.

They called for an emergency meeting of UNASUR. I don't know if they held it without him or are waiting until he returns.  But after that meeting, I think we will hear more about what they plan to do.  It wouldn't surprise me at all if they do something in unity, including maybe defiantly offering asylum.

      •  considering the horrific treatment of Manning (3+ / 0-)

under the Obama administration, that should give any country not sucking up to Obama, the humanitarian grounds to offer Snowden a home.

I hated the 8 years of Bush/Cheney. But this country is still going down that same dark road, under Obama, and I am coming to hate it just as much as I did back then.

        Where do we find hope?

is probably the best bet at the moment, it is more economically independent than many of its neighbors because of its oil reserves.  the us currently purchases some part of venezuela's production, but us demand could easily be replaced by some other country's (china?) demand.

i suspect that regardless of whether they have the nerve to offer snowden asylum, the way that obama has bullied them is going to have long-term effects on relations with our southern neighbors.

i would imagine that the european countries don't like being leaned on either, but i suspect that the governments of those countries are in it up to their eyeballs due to their cooperation with the us.  they probably haven't mentioned a lot of these activities (which are illegal in their countries) to their citizens and the leaders of those countries are likely feeling a little trapped and desperate about now.
