  •  Dude, naw. Can't do that here. (26+ / 0-)

    So much wrong . . . .

    1) The practical issue:  Putting that word in the title is gonna trip people's filters, at work or other places.  There's a reason certain words can't be used in diary titles.

    2) The slur:  Lobbing a slur at anyone, for whatever reason, is wrong.  Period.  Whether it applies to that person or not.

    3) The biggest fail:  Look, I support reclaiming terms (which means that oppressed group members can use them within the group in ways that out-group members cannot); I do it myself with certain terms.  But that's not what you've done here.  What you've just done is legitimize white racists' use of the term, because you've taken it and internalized the very meaning they find in and value they place on the term, and then flung it at someone else, in exactly the same way they use it.

You should've just gone with "racist." It's accurate, and frankly, far worse to be a racist than a "n-----," which is itself merely an artificial [racist] construct.

I thought initially I might be able to remove the HR if the title's changed, but no.  There's too much of the same in the diary.  It would have to be overhauled completely before I can do that.

Thank you for this clear and concise instruction on the power or language and how oppressed groups can sometimes subvert hateful speech.

    •  I had a conversation with (4+ / 0-)

a woman I work with about this. She used the usual canard about "if black people use it talking to each other than I should be able to use it too."

Then I asked her if I should be able to use the C word since I hear women call each other that occasionally.

For some reason in her mind that is different but she could not articulate that reason with anything that resembled a good argument.

    •  Nope, what I did was... (0+ / 0-)

Give the word back to Paula Deen and those of her ilk. Because they invented it and all it is an ugly reflection of themselves. Way different than what you describe. Didn't lob a slur at anybody.  Just gave them back the word they invented and tried to invest black people with.  Sorry if you don't get that.  As for the word in the title, OK fine.

      •  Oh, I get it. Sorry you don't. (3+ / 0-)

FTR, I'm part Black.  And your use of the word was not reclaiming it in any way.  It was merely offensive - and not to her, to us.  I do NOT accept that word in any way, shape, or form to be applied to me in the way that white racists mean it (and also FTR, I have been called that by white racists, so let's get that right the hell out of the way up front) - which is precisely how you used it.

That U choose to be offended rather than understanding. Your mind has been closed and weakened by the very racists and word U claim to abhor. Irrelevant that you're part anything. I guess that's your way of saying you have a right to be offended and gives U some sort of credibility in terms of your comment, but all it does is prove you're color afflicted and affected--just like the racists want U to be.

          •  HR for being incapable of spelling out (0+ / 0-)

Okay, no.  For sitting there and providing a bullshit psych analysis of one of the most highly regarded people on this site.

STFU with that, and back down: you U've already lost this one.

And yeah: we all have the right to be offended -- and you have no fucking business being a schmuck when addressing someone who is so much more on top of this than you are.

Baldwin is a gem. I understood exactly what you were trying to do.
