  •  Thanks marty. And for the osprey ID. (10+ / 0-)

The white on the head looked like that but I couldn't tell whether it was black or shade, the rest. I know ospreys like nesting on structures out in the open.

You've been getting a lot of fog lately. is that typical? Our fog starts in earnest later in the summer, though we get some now and then throughout summer. On the ferry a couple of days ago we were in pea soup fog, and there was a staff person standing on the bow looking for recreational boats in the way, pointing to them when she saw them, so the captain upstairs could honk or veer if necessary. We were traveling at a crawl. Then all of a sudden it cleared up. Really variable around here.

    •  A screen capture of an osprey on the nest. (9+ / 0-)

It's the shape of the head. In many pics, the bird looks like it has a white head and black body, but they are actually brown, and the head has some black/brown markings on top. This one was on the nest at Hailuoto, Finland.

Our fog comes in July and hangs about until the end of August, much like San Francisco, where Mark Twain experienced his coldest winter one August.
