  •  Neo-libs don't know this "heart" you speak of here (5+ / 0-)

There was just no room allowed for this kind of criticism in that course.  He would have responded by scolding you and telling you that we do far better good for humanity by striving to build the world of "perfect competition" than by forever restricting it.

And he'd say, well, the alternative to the soccer-ball sewing kids is no job and even more starvation and famine.

There is no winning over these guys.  They construct abstract models and insist on reasoning within the world of the models alone.

Their courses are carefully built such that the assumptions on which the models are based are taken as given.  Attempting to debate the assumptions would have required a literal insurrection and resulted in a failing grade and disciplinary action.

The saddest part is that this was basic Econ -- not an advanced course for those who had drunk the neo-lib KoolAid, but supposedly a general introduction to the discipline.

      You know that one?

A chemist, an engineer and an economist* are stuck in a hole, and each tries to devise a plan to get out.  You can probably finish it from here ..... :-|

*(the original joke is at the expense of all economists but i think we can repurpose it for the neolibs)

"A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defence agst. foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home." - James Madison
