    this is our sphere of interest. And the situation's a win for us in the power game: Israel's got one fewer opponent to deal with; Russia and Iran now have a scrap heap for an ally, and we're free to drone the jihadis there like we do anywhere else.

    Another diarist wrote there there was a secular, democratic opposition in Syria but we didn't support it. I'd say it's not in our rulers' interest to do so.

      If a democratic, secular opposition takes over, all the good things you listed still hold true.  One fewer opponent for Israel, no ally for Russia and Iran, and no jihadis to worry about.  You just made a case for supporting the opposition.

    •  Drones don't work when the local nation has MiGs (0+ / 0-)

      Drones work of Pakistan because the Pakistani gov't allows them there. Syria, with extensive air defenses and MiG fighter aircraft, is probably not a second such location. I assume Assad will not want to eat a Hellfire missile, so he just might order drones shot down.
