I've been trying to decide whether to pick it up. A friend adored it at first, recommended it but mentioned she found it a bit standard in terms of private eye conventions. (She writes mysteries and after a while, the conventions can get to people in the field.) Now that she's read farther, she's suggesting I put it on hold at the library rather than buy it from audible. She said it was clear Rowling was having fun with her private eye, but that there was a lot of telling, not showing, and she was getting impatient for the plot to get going. Also it was getting to be too derivative of old PI plots for her -- maybe just an occupational hazard, though. So I'll be very interested to see what you think, will hang onto my audible credit till then.

I just read a couple of Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie mysteries, found them very worthy, particularly liked the last 1/3 or so of each and the denouements. But she puts in a lot of detail -- lists of preferences, e.g. Until that last 1/3, when I was hooked enough not to care, it was driving me nuts. But I have another writer friend who especially loves that about Atkinson's books, feeling it adds richness.

slow, but the narrator is very, very good.

I have had a couple Atkinson books on my kindle for a while, but something always seems to distract me from them. One of these days, though.
