    •  Is it just another "Springtime of the Peoples?" (2+ / 0-)

The European Revolutions of 1848, known in some countries as the Spring of Nations, Springtime of the Peoplesor the Year of Revolution, were a series of political upheavals throughout Europe in 1848. It remains the most widespread revolutionary wave in European history, but within a year, reactionary forces had regained control, and the revolutions collapsed.
Reactionary cliques play the long game, and they can always afford to wait out almost any number of epic manifestations in the street.

Even when new parliaments were created in 1848, after all the smoke cleared away, Metternich and the Ancien Regime returned for another 70 years of business as usual in Austria and most of the other the German States, and 20 years in France.

But in a way the outcome of "Arab Spring" has been even more reactionary than Metternich, especially in Egypt and probably Libya, too, because both those countries are apparently falling right through the floor of modernity, and for tens of millions of Muslim men and women the re-emergence of medieval Islam looks more like an "Arab Autumn" than any kind of spring.

So I guess we can pray for a better outcome in Brazil and Turkey, but anybody who claims to foresee the future of those massive protests is probably just blowing smoke.

Get the foot in the door.
!954 took 200 years to get here.
Gays...GAYS are looking at equality. We're talking 6000 years. That alone gives me goose-pimples.
I always go back to this:

“With every passing hour our solar system comes forty-three thousand miles closer to globular cluster 13 in the constellation Hercules, and still there are some misfits who continue to insist that there is no such thing as progress.
        -- Ransom K. Fern”

Progress plays the longest game of all.
