  •  I;m sorry your article became a flamewar (18+ / 0-)

I happen to agree with what you wrote.  Just on Saturday, my Dad, who is liberal but at the same time annoyingly into conspiracy theories, asked me, "Do you think Snowden is a traitor?"  And i replied, "He wasn't at first, but he's getting there."

Given that there is such an air of stridency around here these days, I dont think it would have been an unreasonable strategy to just engage the people in the comments section who either agreed with you, or disagreed in a constructive fashion and wanted to have a substantive conversation, and to ignore the rest.  Why make yourself so stressed over people who just want to flame you into silence?  You're right, there is a strong element of anti-government feeling around here these days, and those voices are ascendent right now, but this has always been a very diverse website as far as its users, and things will swing back the other way (working within the system to heal the system) at some point.

Really, you contribute too much to this website (I LOVE your astronomy series) to feel you have to be treated this way.

    •  I don't think we can just idly assume (6+ / 0-)

things are supposed to improve by themselves by ignoring it when people lie and spew psychotic hate.  We have to each be part of the solution.

Yeah, see, the thing about that is....(runs away)

      •  I have stayed away from this fight (7+ / 0-)

for a long time. Hell, I have enough of a fight on my hands as a supporter of the 2nd, but you see I became RKBA because of the destruction of the Bill of Rights through the 4th. You would think I would be out there on the libertarian scream side. I'm not.

I don't think we get anything done by losing sight of the actual problem and devolving into personality fights. This program has been around a long time, it's become the cause du jour because of the desire to whip Obama with anything, anything at all.

I believe in civil liberties, I guess you could say I'm a civil libertarian, but I am not against government and am for more government action. Without a strong federal government that is functioning and engaged we are at the mercy of people like Snyder or Scott or any number of nut bags.

There is no space here to engage the fallout from the Patriot Act and work to do something constructive about it when every discussion ends in "Obama must go". My gawd it's exhausting.
