" careless, low turnout election away from having whatever state we live in turned inside out and gutted by these people."
Yes! You make my point better than I do, and w/less words.

You know, I saw the latest version of "The Great Gatsby," last weekend. I'd love to do a whole diary on just that, this version vs. the last version, and the ultimate version by Fitzgerald.

But for here and now, suffice to say, I think Fitzgerald's last paragraph in his book, is about as perfectly written as it can be, in taking in all that came before.

My fave line in that amazing paragraph?  "They were such careless people."

We cannot afford to be careless, even in the face of so much that's wrong w/our party. We cannot afford to soap box, even as we understand the need to critique. There IS a difference, and even if it isn't as broad as we wish it were, we cannot be "careless" enough to dismiss it.

In too many ways, 2010 got the republicans more than 2008 and 2012 got the Democrats. Let's not forget that as we approach 2014.

"A typical vice of American politics is the avoidance of saying anything real on real issues." Theodore Roosevelt.

Hope you go for that diary, you write so well. Hmmmmm, thinking about the careless people quote. I wonder if there isn't two kinds of careless? The rich who just can't be bothered about anything but their own wonderful lives, and the garden variety careless person who really doesn't follow politics and repeats the crazy "the two parties are the same" nonsense and that makes them feel justified to stay home in an off year election (like 2010).
      I know several like that.
