  •  As one of the "younger" folks on this site (9+ / 0-)

I do see a disconnect by older people on some issues. Especially when it's things that primarily affect young people, like student loans. I've had to read the "I worked my way through school" lecture more times than I can count here. Which isn't to say that all people who are older do this, just that it's something that happens.

I'd also note that it's hard to hear older people talk about age discrimination at work and then go look at the unemployment numbers by age group.

Thanks for the diary, it's an important issue.

Also for the help with tear down at NN13

If debt were a moral issue then, lacking morals, corporations could never be in debt.

with no kids and I think student loan reform is one of the primary economic issues of our time. We're telling our kids to go out and join the race with an anchor tied around their ankles. And, yeah, anyone who thinks that you can work your way through college these days at a near-minimum wage job is totally full of shit.

i understand your frustration when you look at the loans and unemployment issue.

when i see the charts showing the disparity between groups unemployed, my heart breaks in two ways.

for your age group - the unemployment numbers show you have no future.

for the seniors - the unemployment numbers show WE have no future.

you have nothing to build on to make your senior years secure - or even your current years.

seniors have nothing to be able to build on as they are cut loose from the work force due to age discrimination so they are stuck with what ever meager social security there is to try to survive.  (and, believe me, it isn't enough - nor was it ever intended to be.)

social security was designed to supplement pensions to bring seniors out of poverty.

now, there ARE no pensions for the young generations - the union gains are gone, corrupt companies have manipulated the system to steal pensions that WERE in place for the middle class.

what terrifies me is that there really is no future at all that resembled the promise of the america of my youth.  there is no promise at ALL for your age group.

until we can get democrats in overwhelming numbers back into congress to re-write these critical legislation policies into indesputable form, this nation is headed toward collapse.

until we can get enough democrats to allow the democratic nominee to get appoints to judiciary and the supreme court, we will lose everything gained in the last century.

i understand the anger of your generation when you see your future denied.  i understand the anger of my generation when we see it stolen after we fought so hard to gain those rights.

it is ONLY when we can join forces and work together that we can finally change the system - and change, we must.

IF the system collapses, the void will be filled with the very ones who are trying so intently to destroy it: the multi-national power brokers who want to see a world dominated by the power of money.

it is up to us to stop that... if we can and if it is not already too late.
