    Civility in public discourse has become the exception, not the rule, and saying so is practically a cliche.

    It is difficult to maintain civility when there are fewer and fewer people reciprocating, and it's especially difficult when the non-reciprocators are those who are in a position of political leadership.

    I also remember McCain's "Obama is not an Arab" moment in 2008 and the respect it engendered, however fleeting.  Would that more political leaders set civil examples, and that those who don't would not be rewarded for it.
