Rain suddenly started pelting the window beside me, and I hear it on the metal roof.

Construction started on our house in 1921, and it was finished in 1923. The family first moved in in early 1924. It originally had a cedar shake roof, It lasted about fifteen years before they decided to replace the shakes with ridge-seam steel in 1939. Same roof on this house since 1939, and no sign at all of wear. If you paint it once in a while with rust proof paint, it will last forever. We had it painted about ten years ago, using a rust-proof paint that has fiberglass fibers in it. It also was treated with something that is supposed to prevent mold and mildew.

It shows no signs of rust, and we were told that particular paint should be good for at least twenty years before we begin to see some rust spots. Try getting that kind of mileage out of ordinary shingles--even high priced ones.

One other thing about a solid steel roof. There are no shingles to blow off or start leaking in a high wind. That is why they replaced the cedar shakes in 1939.  This is not tornado country, but we have extremely high winds in the mountains.

    •  Forecast (0+ / 0-)

Keep in mind we have already been in this pattern for about a week:

The very unsettled weather pattern should persist through Saturday with periods of showers and thunderstorms. A few of the storms could be strong to severe with damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain being the main hazards.

I am starting to get cranky, not that it does any good.

We have talked about roofs before, I think.  Next time we replace the shingles, I am going to look into a metal roof.
