    the culprit was asked -- before any capture, any charges, any trial, any verdict -- what punishment most fit a crime such as had been committed.

    and the culprit answered, gladly, in detail, so all could hear.

    when captured, charged, tried and found guilty, the culprit was deemed best to have detailed the punishment soon dispensed; and none shed a tear, as it was just, and fair.
