  •  2014--It's Women and Voting, stupid (0+ / 0-)

Why be surprised about this ruling? We have a 5-4 right wing activist conservative SCOTUS majority. Rehnquist warned liberal justices that conservatives on the Court intended to be activists. Should a conservative justice die/ retire, the nuclear option must prevail. Then this voting rights case and Citizens United can be revisited.  The Roberts's SCOTUS now talks of "equal dignity" for the states, eg., Miss. and Mass. have similar histories, LOL! This sounds like echoes from Bush v. Gore. Scalia and his "W 5" then argued that Bush votes were being "discounted" by the Fla. Supreme Court ruling or being given less equal protection. Get real!! In 2012, minority voters resented being denied their right to vote and came out in droves to stop the "Red" State legislative voting stunts. Women showed up too, fed up with birth control/Planned Parenthood wars. In 2014, Democrats must take back Congress and keep the Senate. How? By emphasizing that if the GOP holds power, women's rights and voting rights are on the chopping block. No more 2010's! "The coalition of the ascendant," Obama's Democratic group of women, minorities, and younger voters  (Ron Brownstein's term) must repeat their 2012 turnouts.  Sen. Schumer indicated that as long as there is a GOP Congress, Sec. 4 of the Voting Rights Act won't be re-written. That and the Senate filibuster nonsense must change. If Democrats want more of Trent "Akin" Franks and more voter suppression, just stay home in 2014. It's women and voting rights, stupid! For more on Trent "Akin" Franks and other GOP loonies, read   this
